Our topic is the Drought-Water Conservation We are trying to come up with a policy for people and mostly home owners to be concerned about how much usage of water is being distributed and how it can further affect the world. We need a strict policy.

My Civic Action Team have chosen the subject of improving CPS. In this Civic Action we found out that people just aren't interested in this career because of the very low pay so therefore we are trying to ask people to apply.

What do you think needs to be improved regarding to CPS?

Even though America is reducing poverty rates we still have many that will enter into poverty. As of now 45 million Americans are bordering the poverty line or below. The poverty line being the minimum income deemed healthy enough and safe to sustain a person and/or their family size. What are ideas to bring more jobs to the public, raise wages without severe damages to one side, and help the homeless recover?

Our problem with the cafeteria food at SLZHS is the health and the taste of the food. If the food is good it's too high in calories, and if the food is bad, it's healthy. Because of this, students are either growing unhealthy or not eating at all.  We are trying to change the school lunch with the help of the students to get them to be strong individuals who can perform in class with the right amount of nutrition. We are open for opinions on our Civic Action, and would like to k now what you guys think about it.

In the city of Los Angeles, South Central is always criticized and looked "bad upon" just because of how our community is. Our community is different from any other community in Los Angeles. We have an estamated 200 people living in one block , compared to Beverly Hills where is 70 or less. An example is the amount of fast food resteraunts that are located around our community or the amount of liquor stores. Where is a nutrition store in our neighborhood that actually helps our health? We need to inform people that our people are always getting subliminal messages just because of our community.

Teachers have one of the most important roles in society. However, a teachers compensation for their services is not enough given the role they play, and the B.S they go through to teach kids. Our plan is to raise the average teacher salary to $60,000 to encourage more people to become teachers and to give teachers a fair compensation for their services. The money for this would come from a .5% increase in state sales taxes. This would only be small tax increase, but would still bring in millions of extra dollars.

I am trying to come up with a policy that will make a better living environment for livestock. Most farms are full of feces and the animals become sick and infected with sickness. To get rid of the infection, the animals are injected with antibodies that fight it. When we consume these animals we become immune to certain antibodies that fight common illness, like the cold, and because of it we need stronger vaccines.

School has become more about the lectures and standardized tests than the actual education and retaining information. If school was more interesting to the student, they would be way less likely to dropout or act out in the classroom because the teacher has the full attention of the students. Along with montessorri being more affected with the student feeling like they are getting things done with class and they are actually learning something they will have a better relationship with their teacher, when you have a better relationship with your teacher you're more likely to not be scared to ask questions and get the information you need from your instructor.

Gun Violence

Bookmark

Gun Violence has been a rising epidemic throughout the world over the past decade and has been responsible for casualties of innocent citizens. The issue surrounding firearms falling into the wrong hands is seen frequently on the news and in the media, but the United States has yet to take the initiative to create and enforce new policies and laws that are more strict to try to prevent any more casualties due to guns. When people see reports on the news about a shooting that led to a mass casualty, their typical response is to send their prayers to the family who lost a loved one or to the town who is left mourning, they may even post a new status on Facebook telling their friends to pray and keep the town in their minds for moral support, but that is not going to stop or prevent the issue. The United States needs to create new policies, laws, and regulations to protect our beloved country from gun violence threats.

In order to solve this major issue our country is facing, we propose that every current and potential gun owner must successfully pass a thorough background check in order to purchase and own a firearm. Background checks are used already by major businesses who want to make sure their employees are people they can trust, policemen and investigators use them as well to gain information at the person at hand. The background checks will check the following specifics: any personal or family history with criminal records, personal and family history with health records, employment records, relationship status, and reason for wanting to own the firearm. There shall also be an in-person interview given to each individual who wishes to own a gun to make certain that the person gaining access to the firearm is healthy and trustworthy enough to do so. This test will be performed by trained investigators in each state hired by the government to fulfill the needs for these checks as a full time job.

Since it is written in the Constitution, in Amendment 2 that American citizens have the right to bear arms, some may find this policy as unconstitutional; although in order to solve the problem, people need to make a compromise to achieve the outcome they desire. In this case, if United States citizens want to eliminate or at least reduce the amount of gun violence in the country, then the United States government shall then have to impose new laws and polices to reduce the total freedom the citizens have towards their gun rights in order to protect the people of this country.

It is the harsh reality that it is impossible to completely eliminate every single gun from the United States, and even the world, since unfortunately there are people who sell guns and other firearms and weapons on the black market and in secret from the government. But although we cannot destroy the violence entirely, this policy will reduce the amount of incidents resulting in casualties due to firearms because the government will eliminate the easy access to guns for criminals, mentally and emotionally unstable, and other threatening people. Also, the background checks could do more than just benefit the general public for when the individual forgoes these background checks and interviews and health screenings, they may become aware of any health conditions they were previously unaware they had. The public shall most likely approve this proposed regulation because it will give them the peace of mind of living in a protected manner knowing that guns will be issued only to those who passed the exams given by the United States government.

Grade relevant fitness

To decrease our obesity ratings we should change p.e into just a straight fitness/conditioning  class from kindergarten all the way though High school. There will be 3 different levels of fitness you can be in level 1 is the low level, level 2 in the medium level, level 3 is the high level. The standards that your determine your level will be based on your grade level. The standards will be created by trained professionals in fitness. the goal is to become level 3 by the end of each year your in school. Since this would start at an early age being fit is all people would know so the health in our nation will have a major increase.

Goal: To reduce obesity and promote fitness nationwide.

Rivals:

Supporters -

  • Students
  • Administration
  • Parents
  • PE Teachers

Opposers -

  • Students (who don't care for fitness)
  • Administration (not wanting to change old standards)
  • PE Teachers (not wanting to work harder)

Advantages: Fitness promotes motivation in all aspects of life.

Example: Health, in school academically, confidence, etc.

Disadvantages:  Honestly, less fun in PE classes.

Evaluate: Policy will work and will only benefit students in all aspects rather than do harm.

Schools nowadays have become so dependent on the use of technology that they've lost the ability to let students learn with hands on activities. Schools only focus on teaching you the information to pass the standardized tests than the information that will get you farther in life. Making schools become montessori will get students to engage more with the class through hands on activities and there'll be smaller class sizes for more one on one with the teacher/instructor. This set up will hopefully encourage more students to do well in school, which in turn will reduce the drop out rate. As well as encourage those students to find a career that they are interested in, so they can further educate themselves through a university, trade school, or technical college.

As well as encourage those students to find a career that they are interested in, so they can further educate themselves through a university, trade school, or technical college.

Goals: Make schools more interesting with hands on learning, smaller class sizes, and more one-on-one time with teachers.

Supporters:

  • Students- Learn information in unique and different ways which in turn will make them more interested in education.
  • Parents- Their children would be more willing to get a higher education knowing what they want to do.
  • Teachers- They will have more students passing their classes with higher grades.

Opposers:

  • Teachers- Would have to be more involved with their students learning
  • Taxpayers- In order for classes to be more interesting the schools would need to buy more supplies.
  • Schools Districts- With class sizes being smaller, school systems would need to find ways of offering more classes without changing school size.

Advantages:

  • More one-on-one time for students to get help from teachers.
  • Smaller class sizes.
  • Hands on projects will keep student interested in learning.
  • Students will get better grades from being more interested in school (Hopefully).
  • Students will know what they want to learn for their major/minor.
  • Reduced drop out rate (Hopefully).
  • More jobs for teachers.

Disadvantages:

  • Limited number of students allowed in schools.
  • School systems would need to enlarge schools or create more schools.
  • Not all students enjoy hands on learning.
  • Taxes would go up to pay for the supplies.

Feel free to ask any questions or offer up ideas to make this better. We're open to suggestions.

Health of Livestock

Animals bred for livestock in places like factory farms, generally live among'st many diseases. Their environment is usually unsafe, unhealthy, and unlivable. To keep the animals from prematurely dying, do to disease, factory farmers often inject animals with antibiotics. Once the animals have been processed into food products, we buy and consume them, along with the antibiotics the animals once were given. This causes people to become immune to their prescriptions and medications. If this continues, people will have an even harder time recovering from an illness. If animals were to live in a safe healthy environment, there would'nt be a need for antibiotics in the first place.

Montessori curriculum in schools will decrease the amount of high school dropouts because it is a hands on curriculum. With that curriculum, there is more time for teachers/instructors to actually teach and connect with their students because there is more time to go through demonstrations and perform experiments. The montessori curriculum allows there to be smaller class size which will allow teachers and students to have a great classroom relationship and allow more one on one time. The curriculum also allows the community to be unified, so students and teachers do community service projects together and experience real world connections. Montessori curriculum will decrease the amount of high school drop outs because students will be more interested in school.

Hey everyone! My group and I are currently working on water conservation due to the severity of the California Drought. We are primarily focusing on promoting water conservation at our high school, Terra Linda High School. We have distributed surveys and put up posters. We have planned to create a powerpoint to educate the high school on ways the conserve water, yet there is no sure way to make them conserve water. They are fully aware of ways to conserve water and the seriousness of the drought, so not knowing is not an excuse. Is there any suggestion you people have to make people conserve water?

The traffic on the overpass

In the morning there is a lot of traffic on Ashland, specifically under the overpass. The traffic causes problems for bicyclist, walkers, and drivers. Bicyclist have to watch out for cars that would try and skip the traffic by going on the striped lane. Both the driver and bicyclist get frustrated about who has the right to go on that lane. The same thing goes for drivers and walkers. When students are walking on the crosswalk that is on the right hand side of the school, they have to worry about cars that make unexpected right hand turns. Our proposal is to add two lanes to Ashland, a right turn lane and a bike lane to help speed up traffic. Do you have problems of the traffic on Ashland, either as a walker, biker, or driver. Any suggestions?

Diffrent start time at school

Its very hard to wake up in the morning and get ready for school on time, on top of that you must stay up and remain focused in school for about 6 hours . High school students in the San Lorenzo District need more time in the morning to get ready and prepare for school and actually "wake up" . The question is , Why not a different start time at school? maybe about an hour difference.? Don't you think that would benefit most of us?

reducing waste

The problem I would like to work on is the issue of people not having knowledge of what they can do with their waste. My idea will also involve power & water conservation.Los Angeles is the city that recycles the most . Los Angeles beat New York and Chicago. People around this community already know how to recycle therefore, I want to bring this idea of having workshops that will provide students with ideas on how their waste can be recycled and reused . My goal is not to solve this problem because it can't be solved permanently , waste will always maintain it's existence but , my goal is to leave this community with a positive mindset on how they can improve their lives and the lives of others.

Environmentally Friendly School Restrooms?

An issue that my group has been working on are the school restrooms at San Lorenzo Highschool. We want to improve our school restrooms to help make them eco friendly. We believe that they are very run down and need to be modified, and believe that a lot of water is being wasted with overly using water and paper towels are being tooken advantage of with the use of too many. Our current restrooms also waste a lot of resources like water and paper towels and we would like to make them more eco friendly with replacing paper towel dispensers replaced with automatic hand dryers and getting our water faucets to be automatic to save water. This will help make our school look and feel more eco friendly and help enable a healthier look. Does anyone else feel the same about their school restrooms?

In the communities of San Leandro and San Lorenzo the abuse of illegal drugs and alcohol in minors is very high, especially for Juniors and Seniors in high school. This information has to be told to the parents of the community and to the local schools for a solution. The question is how can there be a stop to a common thing in the community ?

Our generation is dying. We need to do something

No matter how dangerous we know the effects of drugs and alcohol are,we cannot stop using them. Many teens say that theys do drugs/drink alcohol for "Valuable " reason. It's really not an excuse. We need to wake up and help ourselves survive.

So what can we do?

lunch lines to long

A problem that we've been having at our school and that we are trying to address. Is that many locations at or school for lunch have been closed down, which makes the lunch lines waiting time longer. so sometimes by the time you even get your food five minutes after and the lunch bell rings for class to begin. so that gives you five minutes to finish you like and five to go get your things for class. Also, sometimes if you wait until the end to not have to wait in the long lunch lines the food runs out, and another thing is that our large variety that our school once offered has been cut down significantly to a very small amount of variety.

At Arroyo High School, there are problems of crime such as vandalism and theft. There have been multiple cases of vandalism around the school which has a negative effect on the school’s appearance. Painting over the vandalism is costly and takes time away from doing something else. In the last year, there was approximately 5 cases of theft in the student designated parking lot. To promote a safer school environment, a solution to decrease and prevent crime could be the use of security cameras on campus. There are already a few cameras present on campus, but there are simply there for show and are not being used. The district’s policy states that they are not responsible for student’s possessions and anything caught on camera (if cameras are in use) may be use it a crime occurs. Students should be able to attend school feeling safe and not worried that their items may be stolen. Our goal is to change and enforce the district’s policy. The new policy would take the students’ belongings into consideration. The school will turn on and use the current cameras on campus in addition to expanding security cameras into the student parking lot as well.

Enforce No Drop-offs on Red Sidewalk

There are many parents that either pick-up or drop-off their kids inside the school’s student parking lot, rather than using the “loop,” which is designed for the sole purpose to pick-up and drop-off. It’s causing congestion inside the parking lot and poses a fire hazard because they are parking next to a red fire-lane sidewalk.

The congestion will result in traffic and some student who try to park have complained that they have been tardy to class because of this. Another problem is that in the case of a fire or some other type of emergency, the fire-trucks, ambulances, and police cars will have a hard time trying to park their vehicle because parents’ cars get in the way.

The vehicle code12.64.225 Parking Against Red Curb states: a person shall not stop, park , or leave their vehicle adjacent to a curb that is designated by a red paint. We want to enforce this policy more to let parents know that what they are doing is illegal and hazardous.

We want to work on this to prevent accidents and prevent complications to the emergency services. Surveys that we’ve created were given to students that use that parking lot, and all of them agreed that it indeed does cause a problem for them when they try to park and or leave. Also, students that are dropped-off by the red zone were asked if they knew their parents were parking next to a sidewalk painted in red. Most of them responded that they had no idea and that they didn’t notice the red paint. Our buy-in from this problem is that students that park in that parking lot, which includes me and other students with a permit with a a permit to drive, will not have to go through the congestion that is currently happening, and the emergency services will not have to struggle to find an area to park and quickly respond to an emergency.

We will contact our school’s sheriff and discuss the problem. We are going to have the sheriff park his vehicle by the area where the congestion is happening, for a few days to keep the parents from parking there. We are also thinking of making the district have create a sign to emphasize to the parents that what they are doing is illegal and possibly receive a fine for doing so.

Life After High School

The purpose of our CAP project is to create a way for students in high school to find careers that they want to pursue.  The problem is that too many people entering college don't know what they want to major in and end up staying in college longer, or chaining their majors many times.  This wastes money and time that students could be entering the work force.  We want to provide students with career choice opportunities, so that they will be prepared for life after high school.

Sexual assault is a great problem in the military, men and women are getting assaulted and the ones who do it get away with it! There is a big problem in the military's justice system. What is happening to the victims is they can not go and tell on the ones who have assaulted them because if they do they might get kicked out of the military, get "bullied" by others of higher rank, and nothing happens to the one who has assaulted due to there rank.

Our CAP project is to bring back a drivers ed program to our school. We plan to have drivers ed available as an elective class. So far, we have gotten the numbers of people with a parking permit in the student parking lot (you need a license for a permit) in order to compare those numbers to the class sizes. Then, we interviewed some students on some reasons they cannot drive and if they would support drivers ed coming back.

We would appreciate feedback on our topic and suggestions on what we should do to achieve this goal. Thank you

The Quality of School Restrooms

The quality of our school restrooms is unacceptable. First, they are never supplied adequately (with toilet seat covers, toilet paper, feminine products, etc.). Furthermore, the hygiene is atrocious, with paper towels overflowing the garbage cans, urine on the floors, and used toilet paper sitting un-flushed in the toilets. In addition, several aspects of our restrooms are not up to par; for example, we have door stalls that don't lock, toilets that don't flush, and sink faucets that don't work.

Please help us work toward our goal of improving the general quality of our school restrooms; any advice or feedback in regards to what we can do to solve this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
